A gas insert is usually the better choice if heat and efficiency are the priority. Gas logs are mainly about the look of a real fire and simple operation, while a direct-vent insert is designed to keep much more heat in the room.Gas inserts also come with more comfort features, such as blowers, timers, thermostat controls, remote operation and adjustable flame settings, depending on the model.One downside of traditional vented gas log sets is that a good amount of heat can escape up the chimney, so they’re usually not the best choice if your main goal is to actually heat the room.

Gas Insert or Wood Insert — which is better?

It depends on what matters most. Gas wins for convenience, cleanliness and easy temperature control. Wood wins for the traditional fire experience and fuel flexibility. People who enjoy the smell of a real fire, stacking logs, and tending the flames often prefer wood-burning fireplaces; those who want easy, clean operation often choose gas. Pricing is often fairly similar. Wood can sometimes be a little less to install because there’s no gas line to run, but a high-efficiency wood insert can cost as much as, or more than, a gas insert. Can a gas insert be installed in my existing wood-burning fireplace?

In many cases, yes. Before the gas insert is installed, gas and electric need to be run into the existing fireplace. We then drop two 3-inch liners down the chimney for the insert’s venting system, install the unit, and finish the job with a properly fitted and waterproofed chimney cap.A gas insert is typically designed for an existing masonry fireplace. If you have a prefabricated wood-burning fireplace—usually a metal firebox with refractory panels inside—it may not be suitable for a standard insert installation. In that case, the existing unit may need to be removed so Bob can inspect what’s behind it. If there isn’t a proper masonry firebox, Bob can often install a built-in gas fireplace instead, which can provide similar efficiency and a clean finished look.

Should I repair my old fireplace or replace it?

Accepted Answer

If the problem can be repaired safely and economically, Bob tries to repair it first. Replacement starts making more sense when parts are unavailable, the unit has recurring problems, efficiency is poor, or the homeowner wants significantly better heat, appearance or controls.

Why does my gas fireplace keep shutting off or have trouble starting?

There are a number of possible causes, from a dirty pilot or weak batteries to ignition, thermocouple, gas-pressure or venting issues. With 40 years in the hearth industry, Bob can usually diagnose the problem quickly and get your fireplace working again. In the vast majority of cases, the issue can be repaired without replacing the entire fireplace.

Some will, some won’t. Many modern direct-vent fireplaces and inserts have battery-backup ignition systems, and certain inserts can continue producing heat without household power, though fans and accessories may not operate normally.
